Magli: The Story of a Dynasty, by Samuele Mazza:
Stiletto heels and low-cut, or "décolleté," designs are as common as miniskirts these days and most people don't realize it was Magli who introduced the world to this look back in the sixties. Magli: The Story of a Dynasty, by Samuele Mazza, is a big glossy tribute to the once family-run company that aims to illustrate these sorts of achievements. Printed in both Italian and English, the book charts the company¹s history from its cottage industry beginnings in Bologna in 1936 to its present-day upscale market dominance. Strikingly designed, Magli is more than just pictures of shoes. Color drawings from a variety of artists evoke the shoemaker's aesthetic sensibility as well as describing the evolution of footwear through the decades. And the shoes themselves are presented as objects d'art, often in blow-ups that make them larger than life. It's a design choice indicative of pride, because the close-ups allow the workmanship to be easily inspected. Only master craftsmen confident of their abilities would permit such scrutiny, but this is precisely what Magli employs, and so the book is a nice representation of the spirit of the company and a must for those who revel in the compact glamour of a stylish shoe.
