Judith Leiber History.
Judith Peto was born in Budapest. With the advent of World War II, she entered the Hungarian handbag artisan guild, becoming the first woman to enter the guild and later becoming the first female Master. In 1946, she married an American G.I., Gerson Leiber and she immigrated to the United States in 1947.
In 1963, after working 13 years in the American handbag industry, Judith Leiber launched her own firm. The first minaudiere, chatelaine, debuted in 1967 and is still sold today. In the 35-plus years since her company's launch, she has received most of the industry's major awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers in 1994 and the Silver Slipper Award from the Houston Museum of Fine Arts Costume Institute in 1991.
Today she has free-standing boutiques around the world and everyone from celebrities to first ladies proudly carry Judith Leiber bags when they go out in public. The world's largest Judith Leiber collector is New Orleans arts patron Bernice Norman, who owns over 200 handbags.
